Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Most of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. At times, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for us to eat. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk especially, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you elevate your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a superb protein source.

Cold water fish are good if you wish to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. These are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Some grains are actually excellent for fighting off bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all excellent for helping you feel better. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, which can help your mood too. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You were just waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental sharpness while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you consume green tea. And now you know it can help improve your mood too!

See, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try these tips instead!
