Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

Many of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are not good and are to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be super nutritious and good for you. Some foods really do raise your mood when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional boost, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to discover, are fantastic at battling depression. Just make sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Eat an egg and jolly up!

Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Nuts, in addition to bettering your mood, can be a super source of protein.

If you would like to battle depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you battle your depression.

Grains can be good for driving away a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all excellent for helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can truly help to improve your mood. Feeling starved can actually make you feel terrible! These grains can improve your mood since it’s easy for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your sugar levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is really excellent for your mood. You just knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You probably already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
