Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood
Many of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be super healthy and good for you. Some foods really do raise your mood when you eat them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are wonderful for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the egg yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you elevate your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and jolly up!
Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for raising your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given moment. The higher your levels of serotonin, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.
Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you feel happier. These foods can help you feel full for longer also, which is a mood improver. Feeling starved can be terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest. You digest these foods quicker than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were simply waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s concentration while also loosening up the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you are aware that it can help raise your mood too!
See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
