Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we need to keep away from them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be super nourishing and good for you. Some foods really do raise your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to discover, are wonderful at combating depression. You must be sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for elevating your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for raising your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Nuts, along with improving your mood, can be a super protein source.

If you wish to beat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you consume grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. Feeling famished can really make you feel awful! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest them quicker than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You were simply waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you are aware that it can help improve your mood too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try several of these instead!
