How to Boost Your Mood with Food

Mostly, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and must be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that, when you eat them, can improve your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly wonderful at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Consume an egg and cheer up!

Put together a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, along with bettering your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are great for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a bad mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are fantastic at helping you feel better. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. It’s easy to feel low when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while also relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know green tea can help raise your mood as well!

So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
