Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better
Many of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are fantastic at battling depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating a couple of eggs to jolly up!
Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all good for raising your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a superb source of protein.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you fight your depression.
Grains can be wonderful for overcoming a terrible mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are fantastic at helping you have a happier mood. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. Feeling starved can be awful! These grains can elevate your mood since it’s easy for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is found to be packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be healthier. And now you are aware that green tea can help you be happier as well!
So you see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
