Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

Most of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are not good and to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. A number of foods really do elevate your mood when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are terrific for helping you battle depression. You should make sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. Whenever you would like to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for raising your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating some eggs to cheer up!

Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given time. The more of this chemical in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you wish to combat depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are fantastic at helping you be happier. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while calming the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you be healthier. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
