Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

For the most part, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that actually can raise your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you battle depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the yolk. Every time you would like to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, particularly the yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for boosting your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Consume an egg and cheer up!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of raising your mood, can be a super protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to combat depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight depression.

Some grains are truly great for fighting off bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all excellent for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, which is a mood improver. Feeling famished can truly make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your sugar levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is really excellent for your mood. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become healthier. And now you are aware that it can help improve your mood as well!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Try some of these tips instead.
