Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

A lot of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to eat them. There are a number of foods that basically can improve your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to discover, are wonderful at fighting depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Eat an egg and feel happier!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given time. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3 and DHA. These are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you battle your depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are terrific at helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can really help to better your mood. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood glucose which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is really great for your mood. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually induce brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you are aware that it can help you be happier also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a couple of of these suggestions instead.
