While we all love our street Koshari, getting a whiff of its exquisite aroma in your kitchen makes the experience as a home-cooked meal worth it.
How to Boost Your Mood with Food
In general, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and have to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. Some foods really do boost your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at dealing with depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you raise your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that affect your mood. Try to eat an egg and feel better!
Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to fight depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.
Some grains are truly wonderful for repelling bad moods. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. These grains can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you feel hungry! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were simply waiting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while at the same calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be a lot healthier. Now you are aware that it helps you to lift your moods as well!
See, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
