Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

Most of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we ought to keep away from them. Often, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to consume. A number of foods actually do improve your mood when you eat them. If you feel a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you might be astonished to find out, are fantastic at battling depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are terrific for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that dictate your mood. Try eating a couple of eggs to feel better!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all great for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that tells the brain how to feel at any given time. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to combat depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to improve your mood. Feeling starved can truly bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You just knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while also calming the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you become healthier. And now you are aware that it can help you be happier also!

See, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you want to feel better! Try a few of these suggestions instead.
