Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

For the most part, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and need to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. At times, comfort foods can be very nutritious and good for us to eat. There are some foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you combat depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you raise your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Eat an egg and cheer up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of bettering your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you wish to defeat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3 and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly boost your mood.

Some grains are really excellent for fighting off bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are fantastic at helping you be happier. These grains can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. Feeling hungry can actually make you feel awful! These grains can improve your mood since it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while relaxing the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you feel healthier. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Test out these hints instead!
