Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood

Most of us think that comfort foods are bad for us and that we must stay away from them. Often, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this holds true. At times, comfort foods can be very nutritious and good for us to eat. A number of foods actually do boost your mood when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you battle depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. Whenever you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and jolly up!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you wish to battle depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you have a happier mood. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. It’s easy to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood glucose which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously making the rest of your body more relaxed. You were already aware that that green tea helps you become better. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods as well!

So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
