Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we have to stay away from them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. Some foods really do elevate your mood when you consume them. When you feel a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you battle depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for elevating your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that affect your mood. Try to eat an egg and feel better!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to fight depression. Cold water fish including tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, helping you feel better. Feeling starved can really bring you down! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. You digest these grains more quickly than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this specific amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You already knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods too!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
