Use Food to Elevate Your Mood
Most of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we need to avoid them. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be extremely healthy and good for you. A number of foods really do elevate your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you battle depression. Just make sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try consuming a couple of eggs to cheer up!
Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you will feel. Nuts, along with raising your mood, can be a super protein source.
Cold water fish are good if you are wanting to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.
Grains can be excellent for driving away a terrible mood. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. Feeling hungry can be terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is found to be packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps better your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you are aware that it can help improve your mood also!
So you see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try some of these instead!
