How to Boost Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and must be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be super nutritious and good for you. Some foods really do raise your mood when you consume them. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you fight depression. Just be sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for lifting up your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that dictate your mood. Try eating a few eggs to cheer up!

Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to boost your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great source of protein.

If you would like to beat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be excellent for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods also. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your blood sugar which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You were simply anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This will better your brain’s focus while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become better. Now you know green tea can help you be happier also!

Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Go with these hints instead!
