Many of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are bad and must be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that really can boost your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.
Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are fantastic at battling depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for lifting up your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that dictate your mood. Try eating an egg and be happy!
Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.
Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to beat back depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.
It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are great at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full too which can truly help to better your mood. Feeling starved can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
