How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
For the most part, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nutritious and good for you. There are some foods that actually can improve your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.
Eggs, you might be amazed to learn, are terrific at fighting depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for elevating your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to jolly up!
Make some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more serotonin in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.
Cold water fish are excellent if you want to feel happier. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.
Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you be happier. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were just waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while simultaneously loosening up the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!
You can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try several of these instead!
