Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood
Mostly, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and need to be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to eat. Some foods honestly do raise your mood when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at fighting back depression. Just see to it that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating some eggs to feel better!
Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more serotonin in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a great source of protein.
Cold water fish are good if you wish to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.
It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you feel better. These grains can help you feel full for longer too, which can help your mood too. Feeling famished can be awful! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your blood glucose which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You were just waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while relaxing the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be so much healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood as well!
As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Try some of these instead!
