Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are terrible and to be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. Some foods honestly do raise your mood when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at fighting back depression. Just be sure that you don’t throw away the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein food source.

If you want to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you battle your depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are terrific at helping you be happier. They help you feel full also which can really help to improve your mood. It’s not difficult to feel low when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your glucose levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you be healthier. And now you know it can help you be happier also!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you just so to feel better! Try some of these instead!
