How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. Sometimes, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be totally nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. A number of foods honestly do improve your mood when you consume them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at beating back depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Try eating a few eggs to jolly up!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which boosts your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a super source of protein.

If you wish to defeat depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that promote the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you consume grains. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are terrific at helping you feel better. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods also. It’s easy to feel a little bit off when you feel famished! These grains can help your mood elevate since it’s easy for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your glucose levels which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You just knew it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that it helps you to lift your moods as well!

See, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you want to feel better! Try these hints instead!
