Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood
A lot of us have been conditioned to think that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is true. At times, comfort foods can be utterly nourishing and good for us to consume. There are several foods that, when you eat them, can better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually terrific at fighting back depression. Just be sure that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks especially, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for boosting your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat an egg and be happy!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for elevating your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which increases your production of serotonin. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic protein source.
If you want to overcome depression, try eating some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight depression.
Grains can be good for fighting a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really excellent for helping boost your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This will improve your brain’s focus while also calming the rest of your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood also!
See, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Go with these suggestions instead!
