Learn How to Elevate Your Mood with Food
Most of us have been trained to think that comfort foods are not good and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be really nourishing and good for you. There are a number of foods that basically can raise your moods when you consume them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are terrific for helping you combat depression. You must make sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, particularly the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you improve your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Eat an egg and feel a lot happier!
Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and other types of nuts. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic protein source.
If you would like to beat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.
It’s not difficult to fight your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are fantastic at helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. It’s easy to feel low when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you become so much healthier. And now you know it can help you be happier too!
See, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try some of these instead!
