Mostly, people have been taught to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and must be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to eat. There are some foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you battle depression. You need to be sure, however, that what you make includes the egg yolk. When you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you raise your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that dictate your mood. Eat an egg and feel a lot better!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which increases your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein food source.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to combat depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.
Some grains are really wonderful for driving away bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all excellent for helping you feel better. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. It’s not hard to feel low when you feel hungry! These grains can elevate your mood as it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood glucose which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.
Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid known as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while simultaneously calming your body. You knew green tea could help you feel so much healthier. And now you are aware that green tea can help raise your mood as well!
