Foods That Make Your Mood Better
A lot of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we have to avoid them. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that, when you consume them, may better your mood. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, test out a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at beating back depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you improve your mood. This is because they help in improving the function of your neural transmitters, the parts of your brain that affect your mood. Eat a few eggs to cheer up!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling all the time. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Nuts, along with elevating your mood, can be a super source of protein.
If you want to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.
It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. You digest these grains faster than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is really good for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps improve your mental sharpness while calming the rest of your body. You already knew that green tea helps you be better. Now you are aware that it helps you to lift your moods too!
Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you want to help your moods get better. Test out these suggestions instead!
