Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood
In general, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be really nourishing and good for you. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, can boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional boost, try some of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you battle depression. You should be sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be great for raising your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Eat a couple of eggs to cheer up!
Make a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more of it in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.
Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you want to combat depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.
Some grains are truly wonderful for driving away bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are terrific at helping you be happier. They fill you up better and that can help you with your moods also. Feeling famished can be a real downer! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You knew green tea could help you become healthier. Now you know green tea can help you be happier also!
So you see, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try a few of these suggestions instead.
